Born Arthur Merric Bloomfield Boyd in Melbourne, Australia.
1934
Studied painting at the National Gallery School, Victoria.
1935
Began selling his pictures.
1937
First one man show at Westminister Gallery, Melbourne, Australia.
1941
Conscripted into the Australian Army. Participating member of the
"Angry Penguins".
1943
Met Yvonne Lennie - they were married in March, 1945.
1948
First major commission, Murals at the Grange, Harkaway; from the
beginning of this commission he became entirely reliant for his
livelihood on his art.
1949
Exhibited at Koziminsky Galleries, Melbourne, Australia.
1950
Began working on his now renowned Wimmera series.
1950-53
Worked on his now famous ceramic paintings on tiles
1955
Granted major public commission constructed for the 1956 Olympic
Games in Melbourne, Australia
1957
Began working on the famous Bride series, which revolved around
the theme of the half-cast Aborigine and his white bride
1960
Brides series exhibition, Zwemmer Gallery, London, England
Following the Zwemmer exhibition Arthur Boyd gained international recognition for his art. He is
considered by many important art historians as one of the most important Australian artists of the twentieth
century. He has since that time had hundreds of exhibitions and his works are highly sort after by
both important private and public collections throughout the world.
He has received the unprecedented grand honour of three retrospectives of his art in his lifetime
in Australia. His major retrospective of 1994 travelled throughout Australia. In 1995 he was
awarded the honour of Australian of the year.
